Anthony recently asked me about his options for a high-performance car under $30,000. His stipulations are that it should look somewhat sleeper-ish and have some balls (or be able to have some balls with some modifications). He’s fond of more rounded rear-end body styles (think GTI or Focus hatch).
Here’s what I came up with. All have decent aftermarket performance parts if needed, but are great cars even stock.
Mazdaspeed 3
- 2.3 liter turbocharged, 263HP, 280 ft/lbs of torque
- Can be found used with low miles for $19,000.
- 2009 Touring trim model can be had new for $25,000
Mini Cooper S (John Cooper Works package)
- 208HP, 192 ft/lbs of torque
- Nice 6-speed gearbox
- Con: At the top of the allotted price range.
- Con: Styling may not match Anthony’s desires.
2009 Subaru WRX
- 2.5 liter, 265HP, 244 ft/lbs of torque
- Friend with loads of WRX knowledge
- Start at $25,000, $27,000 with stiffened engine mounts, transmission mount, and the excellent STI short-shifter kit
- All wheel drive
What others would you add?
